What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a therapy in which pressure is applied to reflex points on the feet. It is based on the principle that these reflex points are related to the internal organs and glands, and are laid out in the same arrangement as that in the physical body, forming a "map" or microcosm, on the foot. Pressure on a reflex point can therefore affect these structures. This treatment helps to stimulate the normal function of the organ involved, and thus aids self-healing, bringing about physical and mental well-being.

How Does Reflexology Work?

Reflexology works on physical and energetic levels within the body. Physically, reflexology works through the nervous system, which plays a key role in the operation of the body. There are over 7,200 nerves in the feet. Nerves are excitable tissues, which are covered and protected by connective tissue. Reflexology connects with the central nervous system through the nerves running to and from the feet. Reflexology causes a reflex response when pressure is applied to the reflex points. Sensory and motor receptors in the brain receive information via the nerve pathways from the feet. When the reflex is tapped into, a response will be activated, releasing chemical and physical results. The feet receive and integrate information throughout the body, working with the nervous system to assist the body in achieving a state of balance.

Energetically

The energy in our body is the same energy that is in all living things. This energy is known as the "life force" (qi  in Traditional Chinese Medicine). We connect into this universal energy through our own energy fields. The body’s energy fields are composed of many electrical functions dispersed throughout the organic systems. We have electrochemical, electromagnetic, and many other electrical impulses working to maintain balance in our body. The molecules of the body run through many pathways of energy, continuously balancing the system. The body’s energy systems include ten zones and twelve main meridians, all of which divide the body into sections. Each of these sections are connected to the functions and structures of the body and are accessed through reflexology.

Zones

The human body can be divided into ten longitudinal zones, in which the life force energy flows. These zones run from the tips of the fingers and thumbs, up through the brain, and down to the tip of the toes. Five zones are found on each side of the body and extend from front to back and contain the internal organs and glands of that section. Therefore, every organ and body part in a zone can be affected by applying pressure to the feet or hands. Stress, disease, and injury can all lead to congestion along these energy pathways. By stimulating the various reflexes on the feet, it is possible to clear away the congestion of toxic deposits that inhibit the flow of the life force through our bodies, thereby bringing about a state of equilibrium or balance within the body. This improves our health and vitality.

Meridians

Meridians are also part of the overall system of energy running throughout the body. These energy lines are accessed during an acupuncture treatment, acupressure, shiatsu massage and reflexology. The meridian system has 100 meridians and connections. There are twelve standard meridians that are connected to one another by organs and are bilaterally symmetrical. Two vessel meridians are also involved.
